Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program

High-risk, high-impact: Become a leader in MFM at Tufts Medical Center

At Tufts Medical Center, we believe Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists should be more than excellent clinicians. They should also be educators, advocates and innovators who shape the future of maternal and fetal health. Our fellowship provides a thorough, well-rounded education that combines practical training with research, teaching and leadership opportunities.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship is designed to train the next generation of leaders in high-risk obstetrics. We teach fellows how to give great, evidence-based care. They also become confident teachers, advocates for health equity and leaders in research and quality improvement.

Why choose Tufts Medical Center for MFM training:

  • High-volume, high-acuity experience: Care for a diverse patient population, including more than 500 maternal transfers each year, with extensive exposure to obstetric complications and critical care.
  • Advanced ultrasound and procedures: Learn how to get, interpret and talk about ultrasounds. You'll also learn about amniocentesis, CVS and fetal blood sampling. Additional opportunities in fetal interventions are available through a collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital.
  • Research and scholarship: Receive financial and statistical support for basic, clinical or translational research with mentorship to develop your own clinical or academic niche.
  • Self-determination with support: Start as a junior faculty member early. You'll be independent in the continuity clinic, Labor & Delivery and the Perinatal Diagnostic Center, all in a supportive learning environment.
  • Career-ready training: Graduates leave prepared to run ultrasound units, lead clinical teams and excel in academic or leadership positions.

Comprehensive training

Training at Tufts Medical Center means constant exposure to high-risk obstetrics. Over 500 women are transferred each year. Fellows get a lot of experience managing difficult pregnancies and critical care situations. This high volume ensures graduates are fully prepared to handle the most challenging cases with confidence.

Advanced skill development is a cornerstone of the fellowship. Fellows become proficient in ultrasound acquisition and interpretation as well as procedures such as amniocentesis, CVS, and fetal blood sampling. A collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital also opens the door to fetal intervention opportunities, further expanding clinical expertise.

The program's culture emphasizes independence while maintaining strong mentorship. Fellows become junior faculty and have responsibilities in the clinic, labor and delivery, and the Perinatal Diagnostic Center. They work in a supportive environment. This balance builds confidence, leadership and career direction. It helps graduates become great teachers, clinical leaders and innovators in maternal-fetal medicine.
