Dermatopathology Fellowship - Training Experience

Training Experience

Dermatopathology Fellowship training experience at Tufts Medical Center

The one-year ACGME-accredited Dermatopathology Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center in Boston provides an immersive educational journey designed to build expertise in dermatopathology. Fellows gain experience across clinical, diagnostic and laboratory settings while developing the skills and confidence needed for advanced careers in academic and clinical dermatopathology. The program combines structured rotations, high-volume case review, mentorship and teaching opportunities to deliver a comprehensive training experience.

Curriculum + structure

The fellowship is organized to ensure balanced learning and progressive skill development. During the first eight months, fellows split their week between Tufts Medical Center and Inform Diagnostics (InformDx), participating in daily dermatopathology sign-out. The final four months are primarily at InformDx, allowing for focused case review and advanced diagnostic training.

Clinical opportunities

Fellows with a pathology background gain hands-on experience in surgical pathology, hematopathology and molecular pathology within Tufts Medical Center. Fellows with a dermatology background deepen their knowledge of adult and pediatric care, including observing and assisting in surgical clinics and Mohs micrographic procedures. Clinical responsibilities gradually increase from observation to active participation based on individual readiness.

Rotations + schedules

All fellows begin by double-scoping alongside attending physicians to learn workflow and diagnostic approaches. As training progresses, fellows preview cases independently, formulate diagnoses and participate in collaborative case review. Case volume includes approximately 1,000 DIF and 5,000 IMPOX annually, plus access to more than 250,000 cases at InformDx and over 1,000 cases at Tufts Medical Center.

Conferences + educational presentations

Fellows participate in structured didactics and conferences with dermatology and pathology resident trainees at Tufts Medical Center. These sessions reinforce diagnostic knowledge while helping fellows refine teaching and communication skills.

Research + teaching opportunities

The fellowship includes structured laboratory management training, covering histopathology operations, instrumentation, safety, compliance, certification, budgeting and quality control. Fellows are encouraged to engage in teaching activities and contribute to scholarly work.

Mentorship + professional development

Throughout the year, fellows receive one-on-one mentorship from board-certified dermatopathologists and pathologists. This guidance supports both clinical growth and career development, preparing fellows to succeed in academic or clinical dermatopathology.
