Department of Obstetrics + Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics + Gynecology cares for individuals through all transformative stages of life: puberty, pregnancy and menopause. These experiences are best supported by clinical expertise and compassionate care, qualities that are deeply woven within the fabric of our department. Through our research labs and residency programs, we strive to help the next generation of reproductive health professionals do the same.

A safe space for reproductive health

At Tufts Medicine, obstetrics and gynecology isn't just a career — it's a calling. Our passion for reproductive choice and health shines through in everything we do. Our Maternal Fetal Medicine program helps individuals and families through the most complicated high-risk pregnancies. Our clinicians across the region cater to the obstetric and gynecologic needs of people throughout their lives. And our gynecology subspecialists, from gynecologic oncology and urogynecology to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, are accessible when problems do arise, whether they be cancers or more benign problems like uterine prolapse or fibroids.

Even when our community's care needs are anything but average, we're here to over-deliver by meeting our patients where they are — medically, emotionally and culturally. This commitment led us to establish the Asian Access OBGYN Clinic, where we tailor healthcare to be considerate of people's heritages and in languages they're comfortable with, like Mandarin, Cantonese and more.

Through our research, we hope to advance all aspects of reproductive healthcare from the molecular level to the policy level. The research areas are broad but include:

  • Maternal obesity
  • Cervical insufficiency
  • Preeclampsia and other diseases of pregnancy
  • Gynecologic oncology
  • Gender disparities in academic medicine
  • Medical education
  • Healthcare disparities
  • Access to care
  • Healthcare policy

Research laboratories + programs

Our research laboratories strive to answer complex, big-picture questions in reproductive health, like how to optimize quality of life after cancer, how people make contraceptive decisions, and how care models can better address pregnant patients’ needs.

Catalano Laboratory

Named for Patrick Catalano, MD, Vice Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Tufts University School of Medicine, the Catalano Laboratory focuses on maternal metabolism in parents whose pregnancies are impacted by diabetes and obesity, as well as the short- and long-term effects of those conditions on parents and their children.

House Laboratory

The House Laboratory is named for Michael House, MD, an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Tufts University School of Medicine and a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine at Tufts Medical Center. The lab studies the causes of cervical shortening and insufficiency in pregnancy.

O'Tierney-Ginn Laboratory

The O'Tierney-Ginn Laboratory, named for Principal Investigator in the MIRI Perrie O’Tierney-Ginn, PhD, seeks to understand how the maternal nutritional environment (metabolism, diet and body composition) affects placental function as well as fetal nutrient delivery and growth.

Dr. O’Tierney-Ginn’s work is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Yen Laboratory

The Yen Laboratory, named for Principal Investigator, Elizabeth Yen, MD, MA, investigates how prenatal opioids exert a sex-dependent impact on the developing brain. Dr. Yen is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine and a Neonatologist at Tufts Medical Center.

OBGYN + Pediatrics Research Laboratory

At the OBGYN + Pediatrics Research Laboratory, six clinical research coordinators and a research director support the full range of clinical trials, including:

  • Investigational drugs
  • Devices
  • Biomarkers
  • Surveys
  • Quality improvement projects

These trials may be federally funded, industry-supported or investigator-initiated and supported by institutional funds.

Mother-Infant Research Institute

At the Mother Infant Research Institute (MIRI), we’re dedicated to better understanding the intimate biological connection between child and parent during and after pregnancy.

The in-utero environment has a major influence on the developing fetus, altering their gene expression and health outcomes by extension. Pregnancy is also a “stress test” for later health problems in the biological parent, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Gynecology Oncology Research

We have an active clinical trials program whereby we can offer the latest potential therapeutics. We are an affiliate member of the NRG, a national cooperative clinical trials organization that is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Membership in NRG assures that our patients have access to the latest and most effective treatments for their disease.

Obstetrical Research

Sebastian Ramos, MD
Dr. Sebastian Ramos is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist and clinical researcher who focuses on the role of systemic racism in obstetric and neonatal outcomes. His current funding includes a K12 Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Award.

Alexandra Spadola, MD
Dr. Spadola is one of the PI's for the NIDDK funded, GO MOMs study, a large prospective cohort investigation attempting to identify a better way to diagnose gestational diabetes.

Erika Werner, MD, MS
Dr. Werner's research focuses on using pregnancy as a stress test to identify life-long disease risk. She is a national expert on diabetes in pregnancy, preeclampsia and cost-effective practices in obstetrics and is particularly interested in improving postpartum care. She has had funding from the NICHD, the NIDDK, and the American Diabetes Association.

Benign Gynecology Research

We have clinical research coordinators that support the full range of clinical trials, including:

  • Investigational drugs
  • Devices
  • Biomarkers
  • Surveys
  • Quality improvement projects

These trials may be federally funded, industry-supported or investigator-initiated and supported by institutional funds.

Social Justice Research

Danielle Roncari, MD
Dr. Roncari performs mixed-methods analyses examining contraceptive decision-making.

Policy and Advocacy Projects

Megan L. Evans, MD, MPH
The research of Megan L. Evans, MD, MPH, focuses on long active reversible contraception (LARC) access, community health considerations, health care policy, physician advocacy and resident education.

She’s currently the principal investigator for a nationwide project working to better understand sterilization procedures and trends in the Medicaid population.

Tufts Medicine surgeons trust in their colleagues with an emergency labor + delivery

When Drs. Lilian Chen and Abhishek “Sunny” Chatterjee found out they were expecting a baby girl, they trusted Tufts Medical Center with their care. When Sophia was born at 27 weeks  at 1 pound, 10 ounces, they were thankful they did.

Training + education

Excelling in obstetrics and gynecology requires a lifelong thirst for knowledge and the technical skills to put your education into practice. It also calls for people skills — warmth, compassion, patience and the poise to make the right decision in an urgent situation.

Our residency and fellowship programs are designed to teach you all of that and more. We help prepare the next generation of female reproductive health professionals through hands-on learning and guidance from among the brightest minds in our field.

"At Tufts Medicine, the OBGYN Department embodies a culture of advocacy. My co-residents and I use journal articles, research projects and policy chains to advocate for ourselves and our patients."
