Internal Medicine Residency Program – Diversity, Equity + Inclusion

At Tufts Medicine, our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program is crafted to cultivate a culturally competent and socially responsible community of healthcare professionals. Our aim is to equip residents with the skills to deliver exceptional care to patients from diverse backgrounds, while embodying core values such as compassion, collaboration, excellence, accountability, respect, and trust.

We believe that embracing diversity, and fostering equity and inclusion not only enriches the quality of our training program but also empowers our residents to evolve into compassionate, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.

What does Diversity, Equity + Inclusion (DEI) mean to us in the Department of Medicine?

Diversity

Encompasses the full spectrum of individual differences, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, and physical abilities. Embracing diversity brings together unique perspectives, experiences, and talents, enriching our learning environment and enhancing patient care.

Equity

Involves recognizing and addressing the disparities in access and opportunities that our patients may encounter due to systemic and societal barriers.

Inclusion

Fosters an environment where our patients and community feel welcomed, heard, valued, and respected. We strive to cultivate a culture that actively seeks and appreciates diverse perspectives, facilitating mutual learning and growth for all.

How are residents trained in DEI?

Curriculum Integration

DEI principles are woven throughout our residency curriculum to prepare residents to recognize and mitigate biases, communicate effectively with diverse patient populations, and deliver equitable care. Key components include:

  • Noon conference lectures covering topics such as LGBTQIA+ Care, Microaggressions, Trauma-Informed Care, Health disparities, Health policy, Food Insecurity, and Health Literacy.
  • A two-week elective in Health Advocacy and Health Disparities, featuring didactics, workshops, letter-writing exercises, and participation in a health advocacy day at the State Capital.
  • Bias Reduction in Medicine Training workshops.
DEI Committee

Residents can join a hospital-wide DEI Committee or a Women in Medicine Committee. These committees regularly reviews and enhances our DEI initiatives, ensuring our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable patient-care environment.
