The Boston Triple Board Training Program

The five year Triple Board program is a unique training which combines Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and confers board eligibility in each of these three specialties. Our program has been highly successful and has consistently obtained top level candidates and produced remarkably accomplished graduates who have pursued a variety of careers within Pediatrics and Psychiatry at major academic institutions. In addition, graduates of this program are trained as leaders who can expertly guide and foster combined psychiatric and pediatric care in an integrated health care system. During the ongoing national pediatric mental health crisis, trainees and graduates of the program will continue to contribute to a workforce that addresses the needs of children and families in the areas of emotional, behavioral, and medical health.

The Triple Board Program is intended to foster the development of physicians who wish to provide clinical care, to teach, or to carry out research in areas such as child/adolescent consultation/liaison psychiatry, medical/psychiatric disorders, and mental health aspects of pediatric illnesses and developmental disorders. The Triple Board graduate often creates their own niche within the interface of these specialties, most commonly involving Child/Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatrics.

Mission: The Boston Children's Hospital - Tufts Medical Center Triple Board Residency Program is committed to training excellent physicians in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Physician trainees will foster leadership skills and teaching abilities to be able to work effectively with people of various backgrounds. Triple Board residents are trained to provide an expert developmental perspective on the dynamics of physical and mental health throughout childhood into adulthood. Triple Board residents bring a multiplicity of perspectives and are able to integrate impressions within clinical settings to allow for sophisticated and comprehensive treatment planning. We encourage learning in depth across fields, as well as the development of intellectual and personal flexibility to move seamlessly between fields during training and future career. We seek to cultivate residents' ongoing curiosity, creativity, and commitment to lifelong learning in order to prepare for a diversity of career paths. We are committed to training a diverse group of physicians to serve as advocates for children and families in the care of their psychosocial, emotional, and medical needs, and who demonstrate qualities of leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural sensitivity, respect, and compassion.

Aims: The Triple Board Residency Program aims are as follows:

1. Provide excellent training in the fields of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
2. Train a diverse group of excellent physician leaders who are able to work collaboratively across disciplines and in a variety of clinical settings and career paths, with intellectual curiosity and creativity fueling a commitment to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
3. Train physicians who are experts in development and the dynamics of physical and mental health throughout childhood into adulthood, and who are effective in delivering this developmental perspective to all members of treatment teams in order to facilitate comprehensive patient care.
4. Train physicians leaders who demonstrate a commitment to advocacy for children and families in the care of psychosocial, emotional and medical needs
5. Train physicians who demonstrate qualities of leadership, professionalism, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural sensitivity, respect and compassion, who are well-prepared to work with diverse populations.
