Thinking differently about learning disorders
College is an exciting time full of new experiences and challenges. For many students, focusing, learning or staying organized can feel harder than it should. ADHD, ADD, dyslexia or other learning disorders can make classes, exams and assignments more stressful, but help is available.
We work with students to understand how their brains work, identify learning strengths and challenges, and create strategies to succeed in school and beyond. No matter your age or when your challenges were first noticed, it’s never too late to get the support you deserve.
When you visit us, we’ll ask about your health and medical history and talk about your developmental, educational and family background. We’ll also review social or emotional challenges, including mental health concerns. Using this information and specialized testing, we determine if learning differences like ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia or other conditions are making learning harder.
Conditions
We'll work with you to help you understand how it affects your brain and ability to learn and give you tools to help in and outside the classroom. We can also connect you to support and recommend learning accommodations to help you perform at your highest level throughout college and life.
If you're diagnosed with ADHD or ADD, you may also have a disorder that makes it hard to remember words, write clearly or understand math. It's also common to have one or multiple learning disorders. Although your brain may process information differently, learning disorders are not a sign of intelligence. Learning difficulties we diagnose and treat:
We help students understand how learning differences affect the brain and learning, and provide tools to help in and outside the classroom. We can also connect you with support services and recommend accommodations to help you perform at your best in college and beyond.
It’s common for students with ADHD or ADD to also have learning differences that make it harder to remember words, write clearly or understand math. Learning disorders are not a sign of intelligence—they just mean the brain processes information differently. Learning difficulties we diagnose and treat include:
- ADD (Attention deficit disorder): May cause difficulty focusing and learning without hyperactivity; sometimes harder to recognize; more common in people assigned female at birth
- ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder): May cause inattentiveness, impulsivity, or over-activity; can make concentrating during lectures, tests, or reading assignments difficult; affects both children and adults
- Dyscalculia: Affects math skills; may cause difficulty with basic math facts, estimating, counting backward, or understanding math concepts
- Dysgraphia: Affects writing; may cause slow writing, trouble forming letters, spelling errors, or difficulty keeping writing straight on the page
- Dyslexia: Affects language skills; may cause trouble reading, spelling, remembering words, or learning new vocabulary
Testing
We provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you have ADHD, ADD or a learning disorder. Our process may include:
- Reviewing medical history, school records and past test scores
- Interviews with family members, teachers, counselors or others who know you well
- Several verbal and written assessments to evaluate multiple areas of learning
No single test can diagnose learning differences. Many conditions look similar, so we often recommend a combination of assessments. Our evaluation tools may include tests for:
- Hand-eye coordination
- Information processing
- Math and number processing
- Memory and attention
- Reading skills
- Visual-spatial processing
- Verbal memory and word recall
- Writing skills
This thorough approach helps us understand your learning profile and recommend strategies and accommodations that work for you.
Treatments
Once a diagnosis is made, we help you reach your full potential in school, work and life. Your treatment plan is personalized and may include:
- Academic assistance, accommodations or support from learning resources
- Medications when appropriate for ADHD or ADD
- Strategies and tools tailored to your learning style and strengths
- Therapy or counseling to improve focus, organization, study skills and stress management
Our goal is to empower you with knowledge and skills so college is manageable, rewarding and builds confidence for your future.
