The Department of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center has undergone significant growth over the past several decades, guided by visionary leadership. In 2021, Dr. Karen Freund became the first woman to chair the department, continuing its strong tradition of innovation and excellence. Dr. Freund is a nationally recognized expert in women’s health and healthcare disparities research.
The department includes approximately 250 full-time faculty members, 87 internal medicine residents, and 76 fellows across a range of internal medicine subspecialty fellowships. Our 12 clinical divisions provide outstanding clinical care, robust educational programs and research opportunities.
Inpatient medical teams
The resident-led inpatient teams manage approximately 180 patient beds across the following services:
- Bone Marrow Transplant/Leukemia
- Cardiology (including electrophysiology and heart failure)
- Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
- Gastroenterology
- General Internal Medicine
- Geriatrics
- Hematology/Oncology
- Infectious Diseases
- Medical Intensive Care Unit
- Nephrology
- Pulmonary
The typical ward team consists of one resident, 1-2 interns, 1-2 medical students and an attending physician. Our unique subspecialty system and small team sizes ensure that patients are assigned to the subspecialty service appropriate for their condition. Consequently, residents receive education on various disease entities from subspecialists who are experts in their respective fields. This approach significantly enhances both patient care and resident education.
