Advanced Heart Failure + Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program

Tufts Medical Center celebrates 70 heart transplants in 2024.

ACGME-accredited heart failure + transplant cardiology fellowship at Tufts Medical Center + Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

The Division of Cardiology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, conducted in partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This program is designed for board-eligible or board-certified cardiovascular specialists seeking advanced training in complex heart failure management, heart transplant care, and mechanical circulatory support.

Fellows receive comprehensive clinical training at both Tufts Medical Center and BIDMC, gaining hands-on experience in:

  • Inpatient and outpatient care of advanced heart failure patients
  • Endomyocardial biopsies
  • Pre- and post-heart transplant management
  • Ventricular assist devices (VADs) and other mechanical circulatory support
  • Novel drug therapies and cutting-edge clinical research

Tufts Medical Center is one of the highest-volume heart transplant centers in New England, supported by five experienced heart failure and transplant cardiologists and a dedicated nursing team. Fellows also train on the specialized cardiomyopathy service, a 14-bed intermediate care unit for patients with advanced heart failure, VADs and transplants.

At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, fellows gain additional exposure to advanced heart failure therapies, including ECMO management and device-based interventions, in collaboration with interventional cardiology and the nationally recognized Smith Center for Outcomes Research.

Our regional referral network across New England provides unique opportunities for fellows to collaborate with leading heart failure specialists and participate in innovative clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives at both institutions.

for adult transplants in 2024

Tufts Medical Center performed the highest number of heart transplants in New England in both 2024 and 2025. In 2024, the center was ranked 13th nationally for adult heart transplant volume, reflecting its prominent role in the field of heart transplantation.

We set a national record by successfully transporting a donor heart 2,921 nautical miles—the longest heart transport in United States history—to ensure timely delivery to the transplant center. This achievement exemplifies the center’s commitment to overcoming logistical challenges in order to provide critical care.

As a regional leader in advanced heart failure management, Tufts Medical Center offers state-of-the-art mechanical circulatory support, including ventricular assist devices (VADs). Its expertise in VAD therapy is integral to delivering comprehensive care to patients with complex heart failure.
