Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Program

Train with experts in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology in Boston

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at Tufts Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program based in downtown Boston. Our fellows receive advanced clinical and procedural training in the care of people with congenital and acquired heart disease, including those undergoing complex cardiac surgery, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.

With a high-volume caseload, individualized mentorship from nationally recognized faculty and access to world-class resources, our fellows graduate with the skills and confidence to lead in both academic and private practice settings. We emphasize clinical excellence, professional development and a strong foundation in perioperative echocardiography—preparing our graduates to serve as both expert consultants and future educators.

Program highlights:

  • 1-on-1 intraoperative training across high-acuity cardiac and thoracic cases
  • Advanced TEE training with eligibility for certification through the National Board of Echocardiography
  • High-volume experience in transplant, MCS, structural heart and complex valve procedures
  • Personalized mentorship, leadership development and research support

Fellows at Tufts Medical Center train at the region’s busiest heart transplant center, performing more adult heart transplants than any other program in New England. This high-volume exposure, including mechanical circulatory support and complex structural heart cases, paired with personalized one-on-one mentorship, prepares you to confidently manage the most challenging perioperative cardiac scenarios.

Our high-volume echocardiography program features dedicated rotations in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), as well as regular exposure to intraoperative cardiac imaging. Fellows graduate prepared to pursue Advanced Perioperative TEE certification and serve as expert consultants in cardiac imaging and perioperative care.

Fellows are supported in pursuing research projects that align with their interests, with access to mentorship and institutional resources. From clinical studies to quality improvement initiatives, our program fosters academic growth and leadership development, preparing graduates for success in academic or private practice settings.
