Department of Urology

Since 1910, The Department of Urology at Tufts Medicine has been a hub for innovative research and compassionate care for the full range of urological conditions. We're dedicated to advancing the field, from precision medicine discoveries to the da Vinci Surgical System.

Urological excellence for more than a century

We’ve been dedicated to breaking new ground in understanding and treating the urinary system since 1893, when Dr. J. Cushing Allison taught the first urology classes at Tufts University and in the 1960s, when we developed a special laboratory for evaluating patients with neuropathic bladder dysfunction.

Fast forward to today, and we’re keeping the tradition alive by leading the way on minimally invasive surgical techniques like laparoscopy, the da Vinci Surgical System and the incision-free Aquablation® procedure for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate.

Department research

Our understanding of urology is constantly evolving, thanks partly to our dedication to basic and clinical research. That means bold breakthroughs in performing minimally invasive surgical procedures and treating urological cancers and BHP. The Urology Research Laboratory, led by Principal Investigator Andrew N. Makarovskiy, MD, is undertaking two major research projects:

  1. Examining the developmental stages of prostate stem cells and their involvement in malignant prostate tissue growth.
  2. The cellular and molecular mechanisms that enable multinucleated polyploid giant tumor cell growth.
