A heart CT calcium scan is a quick, painless test that checks for calcium in your heart’s arteries. Too much calcium can mean a higher risk of heart disease and heart attacks.  

This test is great for people who don’t have heart disease but may be at risk. Your doctor may recommend it to check your heart health and decide if you need medication or lifestyle changes to stay healthy.

Cost of service

It's important to note that the heart CT calcium score scan is not covered by insurance. The cost is $150, which must be paid at least 2 days before the test.

Testing

A heart CT calcium score is a quick, non-invasive test that measures the amount of calcium in your heart’s arteries. This score helps determine your risk of heart disease or a heart attack.

During the scan, a CT machine takes detailed pictures of your heart to look for calcium buildup. More calcium can mean narrowed arteries and a higher chance of future heart problems. Your results are given as a number from 0 to 300+, called the Agatson score. This score factors in both the amount and density of calcium in your arteries.

  • Very low = 0
  • Mildly increased = 1-99
  • Moderately increased = 100-299
  • Moderately to severely increased = 300+

Other factors like weight, cholesterol and activity level also affect heart health. Your doctor will review your results to help determine your overall risk and whether lifestyle changes or treatment are needed.
