When your cardiovascular system needs repairs, you can count on us to help get your heart back on beat with cardiac surgery. Our team of surgeons use the latest techniques, including minimally invasive surgery, to treat all types of conditions. We tailor treatment plans to your individual needs to ensure the best outcomes possible.
You can trust your heart in our hands
No two hearts are the same. For some people, treatments like lifestyle changes and medication are enough to get their heart health back on track. And for people living with cardiovascular conditions like heart disease or arrhythmia, there may be a few extra treatment steps.
When your cardiovascular needs are anything but average, the cardiac surgery team is here to over-deliver. We lead the way on the latest minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques and perform more heart transplants than any other hospital in New England. We’re honored to be the partner you trust on the good days, and the challenging ones.
Conditions
If you’re living with any of the following conditions, cardiac surgery may be an important part of your treatment plan:
Treatments
Our team performs a full range of cardiac surgeries, from minimally invasive procedures to heart transplants. We’ll work closely with you, your cardiologist and primary care doctor to determine whether surgery fits into your treatment plan.
Coronary artery bypass surgery
Coronary artery bypass surgery (sometimes called a coronary artery bypass graft or CABG) is used to treat coronary artery disease. During this procedure, we take a blood vessel from another part of your body and use it to reroute blood flow back to your heart.
Heart transplant
A heart transplant involves surgically replacing a failed heart with a healthy one. It’s a serious procedure that often involves time spent on a waitlist and a long recovery time. Hearing that you need a heart transplant is never easy, but we have resources and support available to help you process the news and stay strong.
Minimally invasive surgery
For eligible patients, our minimally invasive cardiac surgeons may perform surgery through smaller incisions which can help expedite postoperative recovery and allow for quicker return to full activity. This allows us to perform the latest techniques for getting your heart back on beat, such as:
- Convergent procedure
- Hemi-sternotomy
- Mini-thoracotomy
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
Transcatheter valve therapy
We can replace diseased heart valves with non-surgical approaches known as transcatheter therapies, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). These life-saving procedures do not require large incisions and are excellent options for people who are not candidates for traditional open heart surgery.
Ventricular assist device (VAD)
A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a mechanical pump that's surgically implanted into the chest when heart function is severely impaired. Most of the time, VADs are implanted in the left ventricle, which is the main pumping chamber of the heart.
