Department of Radiation Oncology

As one of the first departments of its kind established in Boston, the Radiation Oncology Department has earned a reputation for innovation in patient care, research and training. We harness the power of radiation therapy to treat cancers and specific benign conditions like keloids, trigeminal neuralgia and inflammatory diseases.

Revolutionizing radiation oncology

We pride ourselves not only on the sophistication of the care we provide, but on the compassionate way in which we provide it. While we strive to remain at the forefront of offering the latest radiation therapy technologies, we never forget the human side of our work.

As a sign of our commitment to staying on the cutting edge of radiation oncology, we continually invest in the latest technologies. With the installation of the PerfexionTM Gamma Knife®, Tufts Medical Center became the first and only hospital in Boston to offer what many clinicians consider to be the gold standard in stereotactic radiosurgery.

Other specialized procedures include intensive modulation radiation therapy and brachytherapy — two technologies we helped to pioneer — along with stereotactic body radiation therapy and image-guided radiation therapy.

Training + education

Students who enter our Radiation Oncology Residency Program ultimately emerge from it as board-eligible radiation oncologists who have the experience and confidence to practice independently.

Diversity is at the heart of our program, where trainees and faculty from all backgrounds come together to advance our field. Our robust referral network directs patients from all walks of life who live with conditions ranging from early-stage illnesses to advanced palliative cases to our care. So, when our patients need us, our trainees are prepared to respond with clinical expertise and compassion.

Clinical research programs

Our Radiation Residency Oncology Program gives trainees the opportunity to care for patients undergoing clinical trials. Residents and medical student clinical research projects span from retrospective chart review, to inclusion in the development of investigator-initiated clinical trials. The Medical Physics Department has an active research program that provides medical students the opportunities to lead an independent project in treatment planning, dosimetry, imaging and radiobiological calculations.

Residencies + fellowships

Tufts Medicine met everything I wanted in a residency program. I was very impressed with the faculty and residents. It seemed like their breadth of clinical training, quality of education and the opportunities they’ve had was, compared to other programs, one of the best.
