Tufts Medical Center announced today that it has received Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the highest national honor bestowed upon healthcare organizations for excellence in nursing. Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. healthcare organizations have achieved this prestigious status.
"When we embarked on our Magnet journey years ago, we knew we had a long legacy of excellence in nursing. Nurses at Tufts MC are the very best —in skill, innovation and compassion," said Terry Hudson-Jinks, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Tufts Medical Center. "That's why it is incredibly gratifying to receive this validation of the phenomenal work our nurses do every day. I have had countless proud moments as a Tufts MC nurse over the years, and there is no question that receiving this recognition ranks among the best of them."
To qualify for Magnet® recognition, Tufts MC was required to meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence by demonstrating superiority in the five Magnet® components deemed essential to delivering superior patient care: transformational leadership; structural empowerment; exemplary professional practice; new knowledge, innovations and improvements; and empirical outcomes.

The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® was launched in 1990 to identify and promote excellence in nursing by using evidence-based research and best practices. Today, the Magnet® program is considered the gold standard of nursing excellence, a distinction earned by only a small percentage of hospitals and healthcare organizations internationally.
Research demonstrates that Magnet® recognition provides specific benefits to healthcare organizations and their communities, including:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.

Further fortifying the health system's commitment to excellence, Tufts Medical Center becomes the second Tufts Medicine hospital to receive Magnet® recognition. Lowell General Hospital was recognized by the ANCC as a Magnet® hospital for the third time in August, 2020.
